In the last Canadian federal and provincial elections, I asked candidates how they would support family caregivers. "Not now" was the answer in one Zoom consultation. I wanted to ask, "If not now, When?" but they muted attendees immediately after you asked your question. However, there is good evidence that improving care infrastructure is good for the economy! Investments in care infrastructure have the potential to create twice as many new jobs as investments in physical infrastructure alone. https://lnkd.in/gPT5ku5h.Informal caregiving may constrain the economy through lost productivity, wages, and benefits.Indata collectedby Gallup Inc., 24 percent of family caregivers report that caregiving keeps them from working more, and 30 percent report missing 6 or more days of work in the prior year due to caregiving duties. These productivity losses are estimated to cost the U.S. economy more than $25 billion per year.A 2011 studyby the Metlife Mature Market Institute estimates that the aggregate cost to the U.S. economy from lost wages, pensions, and Social Security benefits for these family caregivers is nearly $3 trillion.

A highlight of 2024 was a panel I moderated this week about the Hospital-at-Home movement. The big question is payment parity, of course, but there is still plenty to figure out around the logistical/technology challenges and how to alleviate the burden on the family caregiver. As moderator, I got to ask experts in the field - Deborah Di Sanzo, Vin Gupta, MD MPA and Rasu Shrestha MD MBA - about all this and more. For those not following, Hospital-at-Home literally involves taking care of patients at home who would otherwise be at the hospital. But the process and experience feel similar to the patient (there's an intake process, an admission, a dispatch, "rounds," and more).
